Signs Your Pella Door Installation Is Failing

• The door drags or binds at the threshold in summer. Wood and fiberglass doors swell with Florida humidity, but a persistent drag usually means the door panel has settled on worn hinges or the threshold cap has shifted. This is the most common failure we see in Palm Beach, and it compounds fast: every drag chips the threshold finish and accelerates corrosion.
• The multipoint lock throws only partway, or the handle turns but the latch doesn’t retract. Pella’s multipoint lock system runs on thin internal tie rods inside the door panel. • The door sags on the hinge side, leaving a gap at the top lock side. Hinge screws strip in the jamb, the jamb itself shifts, or the hinge leaves spread. Left alone, the door eventually will not latch without lifting on the handle.

What you should not attempt on a Pella door: pulling the interior trim to tension or replace hinge plates on a heavy wood Architect Series panel, and removing the glass to replace a seal, and anything involving the multipoint lock tie rods inside the door. Those jobs put both the door panel and your hands in a position where one wrong move means damaged glass, a sprung frame, or worse. If the frame is right and the glass is rated, the rest is just following through, but getting there takes the right tools and a second set of hands you trust.
